Getting a good result

Reading the results

Picture is the size your camera is sending, which may be lower than the box promised if another app has it or the connection is USB 2. Frame rate is counted from the frames that arrive: below about 24 the picture looks jerky, and the usual cause is low light, which makes cameras slow down. Lighting is measured from the picture itself.

Reading the microphone level

Speak as you will on the call. A good level peaks between −18 and −6 dB. Under −30 is too quiet: move closer or raise the input level in your system's sound settings. At 0 the sound is clipping and will crackle: lower the input level or move back.

The playback is the real test

Numbers cannot tell you that there is a hum, an echo, or a shadow across your face. Record the five seconds, listen on headphones, and look at what is behind you.

Webcam and microphone test: common questions

Is anything recorded or uploaded?

No. The picture and sound stay in this tab. The 5-second sample is played back and then discarded.

My camera works here but not in my meeting app. Why?

Only one app can use most cameras at a time. Close this tab, and check the camera chosen in the meeting app's settings.

Can it test my speakers?

Yes. Play a test tone sends a one-second note to your speakers or headphones.

Why is my picture dark or grainy?

Not enough light on your face. Face a window or put a lamp behind the screen. Light from behind you makes it worse.

Recorded the take? Hand over the edit.
