    How to trim a video

    1. Add your videoDrop it on the box or browse for it. It opens in a preview on this page; nothing is uploaded yet.

    3. Choose Precise or FastPrecise cuts on the exact frame and re-encodes the section. Fast copies the original picture untouched and starts on the nearest keyframe.

    Getting a good result

Precise or Fast: which one to use

A video file stores a full picture only every second or two (a keyframe) and small changes in between. Fast mode copies the file as it is, so it must begin on a keyframe: the clip can start up to a couple of seconds before the point you chose, but quality is identical to your original and a 40-minute recording takes seconds. Precise mode rebuilds the section frame by frame, so it starts exactly where you asked. Use Precise for a clip you will post, Fast for cutting a long recording into something smaller to work on.

Cut on a pause, not on a word

The grey shape under the handles is the sound of your video. Flat stretches are silence. Put the start handle in a flat stretch just before the first word and the end handle just after the last one, then press Play the section. If the first syllable sounds chopped, move the start back by a tenth of a second.

What the Precise file is made of

Precise mode returns H.264 video with AAC sound at 48 kHz, in an MP4 file with the index at the front so it starts playing before it has fully downloaded. That combination plays on iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac and every social platform. It can keep a section of up to 5 minutes; for longer sections use Fast mode.

    00:40Questions

    Video trimmer: common questions

    Does trimming reduce the quality?

In Fast mode, no: the picture and sound are copied bit for bit. In Precise mode the section is re-encoded once at a high quality setting (H.264, CRF 23), which is hard to tell from the original at normal viewing size.

Why does my Fast-mode clip start a little early?

Because it has to start on a keyframe, and the nearest one was before your start point. Cameras place a keyframe every second or so, sometimes less often. If the exact frame matters, use Precise mode.

How long a video can I trim?

The file can be up to 100 MB and 60 minutes long. Precise mode keeps a section of up to 5 minutes. Fast mode keeps a section of any length.

Can I cut out the middle and keep both ends?

Not in one step. Trim the first part, trim the last part, then put the two together with the video joiner. To remove every pause and retake from a whole recording, that is what Studio itself does.

Which files does Fast mode work with?

MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV and WebM. Other formats, such as AVI or WMV, are trimmed in Precise mode and come back as MP4.
