Getting a good result

Which format goes where

SRT is accepted almost everywhere: YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, Vimeo and every video editor. WebVTT is what the HTML video player on a website needs, and many course platforms ask for it. SBV is YouTube's own simple format. If you are not sure, SRT is the safe answer.

What changes between formats

The words and the times stay the same. SRT writes milliseconds after a comma (00:01:02,500) and numbers each caption; WebVTT uses a full stop (00:01:02.500) and starts with a WEBVTT line. WebVTT can also carry things SRT cannot: where on screen a caption sits, and who is speaking. Those are dropped on the way to SRT, and the tool tells you how many captions had them.

Speaker names and styling

A WebVTT speaker tag such as <v Maria> becomes "Maria: " at the start of the line, so the name is not lost, or you can remove it. Italics, bold and underline are kept, because SRT players understand them. Other tags are removed so they do not show up as literal text on screen.

00:40Questions

Subtitle converter: common questions

Does converting change the timing?

No. Every start and end time is carried over to the millisecond.

My file has odd characters where accents should be. Can this fix it?

Usually. Files saved in the older Windows-1252 or UTF-16 encodings are detected, read correctly and saved as UTF-8, which is what platforms expect.

Can it convert a subtitle track inside a video?

No. It works on separate caption files. To make captions from a recording, use the transcriber.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser.

Want captions you never fix by hand?

Upload the raw recording. Studio cuts the ums, retakes and long pauses, adds captions and makes short clips. 30 free minutes, no card.
