    Cropping for Shorts?

Studio makes the vertical clips from your recording and adds the captions, so the crop step goes away.

    Getting a good result

    Where to put the frame

For a person talking, leave a little space above the head and keep the eyes in the upper third. For a screen recording, frame the area where the action happens and accept that menus at the edges are lost. Scrub through the whole clip before you crop: the frame stays in one place, so a speaker who leans or walks can leave it.

    Standard size or cropped pixels

A 9:16 slice of a 1280 × 720 video is only 404 × 720 pixels. By default the tool scales the crop up to the size platforms expect (1080 × 1920) so it uploads cleanly. Scaling up cannot add detail, so the result is softer than vertical footage shot on a phone. Choose Keep the cropped pixels if you want the slice exactly as it is.

When one fixed frame is not enough

In an interview with two people, a single vertical frame can hold only one of them. This tool makes one fixed crop. Studio's vertical clips are cut from the whole recording with word-timed captions. Review the framing and recognized words before publishing.

    00:40Questions

    Video cropper: common questions

Can I crop to a custom shape?

The five shapes cover what platforms accept. For an exact pixel size, crop to the nearest shape here, then set the size with the video resizer.

    Does cropping lower the quality?

The kept area is re-encoded once at a high quality setting. If it is scaled up to a standard size it will look softer, because there are fewer original pixels to work with.

Can the crop follow a moving person?

No. The frame is fixed for the whole clip. Check the full preview before you crop.

How long can the video be?

Up to 5 minutes and 100 MB.
