Getting a good result

Three kinds of out of sync

The same amount throughout happens when an intro was added or removed: move everything by that many seconds. Right, then wrong happens when a scene or an advert was cut in the middle: shift from the first caption after the cut. Drifting, fine at the start and several seconds out by the end, means the video's speed changed: use the stretch option.

Measuring the offset

Play the video and note when a clearly spoken line is said. Compare with that caption's start time. If the line is spoken at 0:12 and its caption says 0:14, the captions are 2 seconds late.

Fixing drift with two points

Type the time the first caption should start and the time the last one should start. Every caption in between is moved in proportion, which corrects a speed difference and an offset together.

00:40Questions

Subtitle timing shifter: common questions

What happens to captions that would move before 0:00?

A caption that would end before the start of the video is removed, and one that would start before it is set to start at 0:00. The tool tells you how many.

Can I shift by less than a second?

Yes. The amount takes decimals, such as 0.35.

How is this different from the frame rate converter?

The frame rate converter applies a known speed change, such as 23.976 to 25 frames a second. The stretch option here works from two times you observed, whatever the cause.
