Getting a good result

Fixing words

Type in any row. Find and Replace all corrects a name that was misheard throughout the file in one go. Rows that break a readability limit are outlined in orange with the reason: too long a line, too fast to read, too short on screen, or overlapping the row before.

Fixing timing against the picture

With the video loaded, press Play on a row to jump there. Pause the video at the moment a line should appear and press Start = now, or where it should go and press End = now. That is quicker and more accurate than typing times.

Split and join

Split cuts a caption at the cursor and divides its time in proportion to the text. Join next merges two captions. Use them to turn long captions into short ones that fit two lines.

00:40Questions

Subtitle editor: common questions

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video and the captions are opened by your browser and never leave your device.

How many captions can it handle?

Thousands. They are shown 40 to a page so the editor stays quick.

What do the orange rows mean?

The caption breaks one of the standard reading limits: more than 42 characters on a line, more than two lines, faster than 20 characters a second, or on screen for under 5/6 of a second.

Can I shift every caption at once?

Use the timing shifter for that.

Want captions you never fix by hand?

Upload the raw recording. Studio cuts the ums, retakes and long pauses, adds captions and makes short clips. 30 free minutes, no card.
