How to make an image file smaller

    1. Add up to 12 imagesPNG, JPEG or WebP.
    2. Choose quality or a target sizeA quality level, or a size each file must fit under, such as 500 KB.
    3. Limit the longest side, if you wantMost of a photo's weight is its pixel count. 1920 pixels is plenty for a screen.
    4. Compress and compareEach result shows its size next to the original.

    Getting a good result

    How target size works

The tool saves the image at several quality levels, homing in on the best one that fits under your number. If even a low quality is too big, it makes the picture smaller in pixels, a step at a time, until it fits, and tells you that it did.

It never hands back a bigger file

An image that was already compressed harder than your setting would come out larger if it were re-saved. When that happens you get your original back unchanged, with a note.

    PNG is a special case

PNG stores every pixel exactly, so it has no quality dial to turn. For a PNG screenshot or photo, the tool tells you what it would weigh as WebP, which keeps transparency and is usually far smaller. Target-size mode switches PNGs to WebP for that reason.

    00:40Questions

    Image compressor: common questions

    Are my images uploaded?

No. They are compressed by your browser.

How much smaller will my photo be?

A phone photo saved at Balanced is usually a fraction of its original size with no visible difference at screen size. The exact saving shows after each run.

Will compressing remove the location from my photo?

Yes, whenever the image is re-saved: the result is a new image without the original's camera, date and location tags. If the tool hands back your original because it was already small, its tags are still there.

What is a sensible target for a website?

Under 200 KB for a full-width photo and under 100 KB for images inside text is a common aim.

    Making videos, not just images?
