Getting a good result

How long a fade should be

Half a second softens a start without wasting it. One to two seconds reads as an ending. Longer fades belong to slow, quiet pieces. On short social clips, skip the fade in: viewers decide in the first second, and a black frame there costs you.

Fades hide rough edges

A recording that starts mid-breath or ends as someone reaches for the stop button looks intentional with a short fade at each end. Trim first, then fade.
