    Getting a good result

    Lossy and lossless

MP3, M4A and OGG throw away sound the ear is unlikely to miss, which is why they are small. WAV and FLAC keep everything; FLAC is the same sound as WAV in roughly half the space. Converting MP3 to WAV does not bring anything back: it makes a large file that sounds exactly like the MP3.

    Which bitrate

For speech, 128 kbps. For music, 192 or 256 kbps. Apple's podcast guidance recommends 96 to 128 kbps for mono speech and 128 to 256 kbps for stereo. A higher bitrate than your source had only makes a bigger file.

    Voice memos and phone recordings

Phone recorders and chat apps save voice notes as M4A, AMR, OGG or OPUS, which some players and editors refuse. Converting to MP3 makes them open anywhere, including in transcription services.

    00:40Questions

    Audio converter: common questions

    Is MP3 or M4A better?

At the same bitrate, M4A (AAC) sounds a little better and is what Apple devices prefer. MP3 is supported by more old devices and software. For podcasts, both are accepted.

What sample rate should I use?

Keep the original. If asked, 44.1 kHz is the music standard and 48 kHz the video standard.

    When should I choose mono?

For a single voice. A mono file is half the size of stereo at the same quality, and podcast hosts accept it.

Can I convert several files at once?

One at a time, each up to 100 MB.

    Recording a video podcast?

Upload the raw recording. Studio cuts the ums, retakes and long pauses, adds captions and makes short clips. 30 free minutes, no card.
