How to work out the bitrate for a target file size

  1. Type the size the file must fit underIn MB or GB.
  2. Type the video's lengthAs minutes and seconds or plain seconds.
  3. Choose the audio bitrate and a safety marginTwo percent covers what the container adds.

The sum

Total bitrate is the size limit divided by the length. Take off the audio, and what is left is the budget for the picture. For 25 MB over two minutes: 25 × 8,000 ÷ 120 = 1,667 kilobits a second in total, less 128 for sound, leaves about 1,500 for video.

Is that bitrate enough?

The table under the answer compares your budget with YouTube's recommended bitrate at each frame size. At 80 percent or more of that figure the picture looks clean. Around half, a talking head still looks fine and fast motion goes soft. Below a fifth it turns blocky, and a smaller frame size will look better than a starved large one.

Or let the compressor do it

The video compressor's target-size mode runs this sum on your file and encodes it to fit.

00:40Questions

Video bitrate calculator: common questions

What bitrate do I need for a 25 MB email attachment?

Gmail's limit is 25 MB and email's encoding adds about a third, so aim for 18 MB. For a 1-minute video that is about 2,200 kbps for the picture with 128 kbps sound.

Why leave a safety margin?

The container adds a little, and encoders overshoot slightly. Two percent keeps you under a hard limit.

Where do I type the bitrate?

In your editor's export settings, as the target or average bitrate, with two-pass encoding switched on if it is offered.

Is anything I type sent anywhere?

No. The sum is done by your browser.
